Noted Theologian and Self-Proclaimed ‘Devout Catholic’ Colbert Says Female Jesus Is ‘Long Overdue’ – RedState

In this episode of “Some of These Stories Almost Write Themselves”…

Welp, get a load of CBS’s silly “The Late Show” host, Stephen Colbert, dripping with the “devout Catholic” fervor he claims to possess, trotting out left-wing actress Cynthia Enviro to gush about her upcoming role as Jesus in a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” — which will play at the Hollywood Bowl of all places.

Yep, Colbert, being the noted [ahem] theologian he is, fawned over Enviro as he told her that her casting as the “first woman to play Jesus in a major production, long overdue.”

With all the sincerity of a used car salesman, Colbert kicked off the faith-based [rolling-eyes emoji] festivities:

Oh, Jesus Christ Superstar, my absolute favorite musical ever! I’m just thrilled to bits that you’re playing Jesus at the Hollywood Bowl in August. Truly, a casting choice for the ages!

Hang on. Coupla things, here.

First, we’re talking “identity politics” to the max.

Second, as a musician and lifelong lover of quality music and musical production, “Jesus Christ Superstar” (the original album) remains a masterpiece, in my opinion. The quality of the songs and their sequence were revolutionary (in a good way) when the album came out.

Third, as a Christian, “Jesus Christ Superstar” isn’t on my list of examples, much less proof, of the sincerity of my faith.

Relative conclusion: Colbert is a smug, pandering clown. But you already knew that.

Colbert continued, only sounding stupider:

At the Hollywood Bowl. First woman to play Jesus in a major production, long overdue, I’ve said for years I’d love to see a woman in that part and what does that mean to you?

Erivo agreed, saying:

It just means a lot to me. I think the idea that a — I can play this role — and I’ve been given the opportunity to play it in front of so many people at that place, this time of my life is a very special thing. It’s the first time I’ve been on stage in that way for a long time, so to do it with this role is awesome and—

Colbert enthusiastically cut her off:

I mean, Jesus is a rock opera, you know, you got to have the …  obviously, you have the range, you know that.

“Oh wow,” Erivo responded, “Thanks.”

Why, that was almost like attending church on Sunday morning, huh?

Not to digress, but have you ever seen a known left-winger mock or ridicule Islam? Me, neither.

The Bottom Line

It’s one thing to wear your (third-person “your”) faith on your sleeve, intentionally running around showing everyone how “religious” you are. But it’s quite another thing to profess your faith, regardless of sect or denomination, and then turn around and suggest that a female Jesus, even in a theatrical production, is long overdue.

Then, of all things, to proclaim your love for the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” as an example of your faith is beyond the pale.

Blasphemous? That call is above my pay grade.
