Good morning, and welcome to RedState’s “Morning Minute” — a brief glimpse at which stories are trending at the moment and a look ahead at what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to kickstart your day.
TOP O’ THE MORNIN’
Red-Hot at RedState
SCOTUS Fast-Tracks Callais Ruling; Ketanji Brown Jackson Hardest Hit
Alito, Thomas, and Gorsuch clapped back at Brown’s dissent, and by SCOTUS standards, their response is quite epic.
California voters have a chance to change the trajectory of the failing state, not only with the mayoral race but in the gubernatorial battle, where Republicans Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco have given us the first real opportunity in years to take back Sacramento.
Iran Hilariously Claims It’s a ‘Superpower,’ but the US Isn’t Laughing – It’s Acting
No, superpowers have power — it’s sort of in the name. When you have your military decimated and the U.S. has air superiority over you, you are not a superpower. And when you can’t stop a blockade of your shipping. Not to mention, your economy collapsing and your Supreme Leader either dead or in hiding doesn’t make your point.
Trending Across Townhall Media
Bearing Arms — Tim Walz’s Daughter Just As Dumb As Dad on Gun Control
Beyond that, though, most people are just braying about how we need gun control, but no one seems to have anything real to propose. Maybe because they know that nothing they could propose would have done anything and they don’t want people like me to rip it apart for being moronic.
HotAir — Restaurants and Retail Stores Have Had Enough of ‘Micro-Looting’
This is the same trend that resulted in every drug store needing to put all of the products in plastic cases. Micro-looting is just shoplifting by another name and, unfortunately, there are a lot of young people who think it’s a great idea and plenty of influencers happy to support it as an attack on captialism.
PJ Media — Nick Shirley Went to Cuba. He Almost Didn’t Make It Home.
“This is probably the most dangerous situation I’ve ever been into,” he said, later adding, “So if I make it out, this video gets seen. If it doesn’t, I’m most likely in a prison cell, which I really hope is not the case.”
Townhall — Justice Alito Just Took Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Cleaners
Now, with this judgment, there was a harsh rebuke of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s dissent, where Justice Alito, in an academic tone, essentially called her a reckless clown who doesn’t understand the law.
Twitchy — Alito vs. Jackson Gets Heated Fast
And none of us is at all surprised; when skin color and sex (even though Jackson can’t tell us what a woman is) becomes the main qualification for important appointments like SCOTUS, the whole court is in danger.
WHAT’S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill…
The critters are off on their “District Work Week,” but that’s not keeping the Dems from their usual shenanigans.

Keeping Up With the Cabinet
Sec. Homeland Security – Markwayne Mullin — Mullin’s been on the job for six weeks now, and seems to be proving President Trump’s decision a good one. Notably, he’s back to having a (mostly) funded department, no longer held hostage by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and the Dems.
I want to thank every @DHSgov employee who showed up to Make America Safe Again during the Democrats longest government shutdown in our history.
For 76 days, these Patriots defended our national security without a guaranteed paycheck.

Full Court Press…
I’ve mentioned that I’ve been playing catch-up on court cases — finally managed to wade through the rest of my notifications, so here are some of the most recent notable deisions:
- ✅ In Louisiana v. USFDA (mifeprestone), 5th Circuit Court of Appeals GRANTS stay pending appeal. [5/1 – SCOTUS has since granted temporary/administrative stay of this order.]
- ❌ In American Academy of Pediatrics v. Kennedy (restructuring of ACIP), Judge Brian Murphy (Massachusetts) DENIES admin’s motion for stay pending appeal.
- ✅ In U.S. v. Cole (J5 pipe bombs), D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals AFFIRMS district court order denying defendant’s release.
- ❌ In Doe v. Trump (USCIS Policies re: Benefits for Non-Citizens), Judge Julie Kobick (Massachusetts) partially GRANTS plaintiffs’ motion for preliminary injunction and administrative stay of policies.
Then, too, we had the rather stunning move of the magistrate judge overseeing the criminal case of would-be Trump assassin apologizing to the defendant, and things getting quite spicy at SCOTUS over the fast-tracking of the Callais decision.

MORNING MUSING
Not only is today Cinco de Mayo — it’s also Taco Tuesday. And just in time to celebrate both, we’ve been treated to a spicy decision by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. (Okay, yes, technically, the order was issued Monday evening, but work with me here.)
Jennifer Oliver O’Connell gave us a great rundown of the SCOTUS ruling. I don’t know who (if anyone) is advising Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, but they’re not doing her — or the liberal cause, for that matter — any favors.
Anyhoo — this is one of those holidays that holds special meaning for me. It was on this day 20 years ago that my beloved Grandma earned her angel wings. And while we were extraordinarily sad to lose her, I’ve always looked at it like this: She lived to be 100 years old. She had a fascinating life — and she loved traveling, especially to Mexico. So I like to think she left us in her own special way — kicking up her heels and partying on her way out the door. Love you, Grandma!! 🌮🇲🇽
