As we reported, Texas passed the redistricting maps at the center of much controversy. Democrats fled the state to break quorum for about two weeks before they came crawling back, and the maps passed.
It was drama for nothing. Meanwhile, they held up getting work done for the people of Texas, even as they claimed they were “saving democracy.” Democrats argue that they got states like California to pursue redistricting. However, in a redistricting war between states, the Republicans appear to have the edge with the ability to add more seats than the Democrats.
The changes in Texas likely add up to five seats for the Republicans. Democrats promised to challenge it in court.

One of the districts affected is presently represented by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), the guy who infamously disrupted President Donald Trump’s Congressional address in March and had to be escorted out. He keeps trying to impeach Trump.

He represents the 9th District in Texas. With the changes, the 9th is predicted to become solid red, according to the Cook Political Report.

The district would transform from southern and southwestern Houston to eastern Houston and eastern Harris County, and it would add Liberty County, which went to Trump in 2024 by a 4-1 margin.
Green said he would not be running in the special election in TX-18 to replace Sylvester Turner, who passed away. Green argued that some of the constituents he had been representing would now be part of the new 18th district.
If you need a laugh for the day, here’s Green’s explanation for how the districts will change. Does this help you understand the change?

Visual aids are supposed to help. If you looked at it and went, “Huh,” you’re with me. It was funny. No wonder they’re having trouble reaching people with explanations like this. Talk about a visual aid fail. Then, of course, he commits the first cardinal sin of the internet: don’t stand in front of an empty white poster that can then be turned into a meme. So memes should be incoming.
Green said it wouldn’t make sense for him to run in the new 9th District. It sounds like he’s planning to run in the 18th in 2026. However, then, he might have to face the winner of the special election and potentially other competition. And even if he were able to prevail, the new 9th district didn’t just go away. It’s likely to add another GOP member. So either way, the effect of Green is blunted. He wants Trump gone, but he may be out of a job instead.
Finally! Now I understand districting. https://t.co/nKnbTBkYTX
