Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testified before the House Financial Services Committee on tariffs and other financial issues.
It was, metaphorically, a complete bloodbath, as I reported earlier. Not only did Bessent level them on the questions, but he left Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters (CA-43) and Gregory Meeks (NY-5) frothing at the mouth.
Bessent wasn’t done yet with the Democrats, though. He tied Rep. Steven Lynch (MA-8) in knots. None of these folks seems to be able to ask him a question without interrupting him. Bessent reminded Lynch that the more he did that and played this “back and forth dance,” that was “just eating your time.”

LYNCH: “SIR, BE RESPONSIVE TO MY QUESTION!”

Lynch tried to appeal to the Chair, Republican Rep. French Hill (AR-2), “The answers have to be responsive if we are going to have a serious hearing.”
Bessent replied dryly, “Well, the questions have to be serious.”
Ooh, nice mic drop there, Mr. Treasury Secretary. Isn’t that the best comment on today’s Democrats? They just aren’t serious. I’m not sure what Lynch’s issue is here.
But that’s the problem when you get right down to it. As we saw with the prior battle with Meeks and Waters, they just want to attack President Donald Trump, and Bessent wasn’t going to let them do it. Lynch wanted to yell at him for allegedly being unresponsive, but when Bessent tried to interject, Lynch went off. “No, this is my time! I haven’t asked you any more questions! I haven’t asked you any more questions, sir. I’m trying to get to my next question!” he ranted.
That’s when Treasury Secretary Bessent just wrecked him, “Could you speak a little louder? I can’t hear you…” You could see that really got to Lynch; he didn’t like that.
Something tells me that Lynch wasn’t able to do much with the foir seconds that Chairperson Hill gave him back. Four seconds – was Lynch kidding? He’s not getting anything he wants in four seconds.
Bessent is brilliant. He drives them to utter distraction, and they don’t know how to handle him. None of them comes close to even matching him. They’re used to just pontificating when it comes to their time, and walking over witnesses. He doesn’t let them get away with that. Meanwhile, as they melt down, he maintains his calm demeanor while being politely savage in return.
