“Never let a good crisis go to waste.” The phrase is often attributed to Winston Churchill, as well as former Barack Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin (D) is apparently taking that message to heart and is using Sunday’s tragic terror attack in Boulder, Colorado by a deranged antisemite against marchers from the American Jewish group “Run for Their Lives” to push for an agenda that has nothing to do with the assault: gun control.
If only we could get rid of those dreaded “military style assault weapons,” attacks like this wouldn’t happen.
The problem with his mind-boggling assessment? No guns were used in the attack. Instead, the terrorist, an Egyptian national who was living here illegally, used a combination of Molotov cocktails and an improvised flamethrower to injure his six victims. That doesn’t matter to a naked opportunist like Raskin:
We are still in the midst of a gun violence epidemic, so we need to be acting with due concern for human life. I mean, this is why, of course, we have been fighting for a universal, violent criminal background check.
What does this have to do with the Boulder attack? Absolutely nothing.
We’re for a ban on military style assault weapons in the country. You know, our lax gun laws are a danger to everybody in America, and that’s something that we can act with some legislative determination to turn around. But people have got to lead their lives, and people need to act with courage, but it is the responsibility of government to try to keep everybody safe from, you know, random arbitrary violence and bigotry, and hate motivated crimes.

This rant comes as Democrats have tolerated, sometimes even encouraged, antisemitism on our nation’s college campuses. For Raskin, who infamously took on the role of lead impeachment manager for the second impeachment of President Donald Trump in 2021, to turn this act of hate into an opportunity to plug one of his progressive pet projects is the height of hypocrisy.

This deranged act of hate had nothing to do with guns, gun control, or “military style assault weapons.” How insulted would you be if you or a loved one were lying in a Colorado hospital bed with agonizing burns on your body, and you see a so-called “leader” completely changing the subject and preening for the cameras? Raskin has proven before that “shame” is not in his vocabulary, but this display of exploitation is rich even for him.
