It seems a little late for Iran to be seeking a deal now, but apparently, they are, and it is beginning to look a lot like the regime is nearing the “grasping at straws” phase. On Sunday, President Trump revealed that the Islamic Republic has sent feelers out to the White House, looking for a new arrangement.
The president indicated that he’s open to a discussion, but struck a skeptical tone. He hasn’t ruled out the United States taking direct action against the Iranian regime in support of the protestors.
The president hasn’t yet ruled out using the military. Historically, use of military powers tend to put a damper on negotiations.
Why it matters: Trump’s surprising remarks come as protests in Iran intensify, the death toll rises and the U.S. considers taking military action against the regime.
- Trump said publicly that he was willing to use military force if the Iranian regime killed protesters. On Sunday he said he is looking at “very strong options” when is comes to supporting the protest movement in Iran.
Here’s the thing: President Trump always seems to be open to talks, even if those talks are unlikely to yield results. He was, after all, a businessman for most of his career, and that’s how one does business, by talking. But in this case, it seems unlikely that anything promising will come out of talks with the lunatics currently in charge of Iran.
Add to that the ongoing rebellion in Iran, which seems to be picking up steam:
Driving the news: U.S.-based human rights group HRANA said on Sunday that more than 544 people were killed and over 10,000 others arrested in the protests that took place in 585 locations across Iran over the past two weeks.
- Israeli defense officials told Axios Israeli intelligence assessments indicate that more than 1,000 protesters have been killed.
- Trump said he was receiving hourly updates on the situation in Iran and suggested it is beginning to cross the red line he has set for the Iranian regime. He said some of the protesters had been killed in a stampede and others were shot.
- “There seems to be some people killed that are not supposed to be killed,” Trump told reporters. “These are violent, if you call them leaders, I don’t know if you can call them leaders. They rule through violence.”
They rule through violence, they preach violence, they export violence, and they promote violence.

President Trump may well be just checking off a card before landing on the Iranian leadership with both feet. “See,” he will be able to say to the world, “We tried talking. It didn’t work.”
It’s probably a little late for the mullahs to be trying to make deals. Over the weekend, it was reported that an aircraft carrier strike group is moving to the area, and an American nuclear carrier strike group is more military power than the entire military forces of most nations. President Trump is also said to be considering talking directly to Elon Musk to ask his help in restoring Starlink satellite service so that the rebels in Iran can more easily communicate with the outside world.
The situation with Iran remains very much in play. Stay tuned.
