The Democrats have been insisting for a while now that their rationale for the holdup on passing the SAVE America Act is that they want to support free and fair – and secure – elections, but they do not want to disenfranchise American voters at the polls. Well, Republicans in the U.S. Senate gave them every opportunity to prove it with a yea vote on a clean, standalone version of the legislation on Thursday.
The amended bill, if passed, would only require eligible voters to show photo ID when they vote in person.
Unfortunately, the Senate vote has failed to cross the required threshold of 60 votes:
Washington — An amendment that would require voters to show photo identification to cast a ballot failed to advance in the Senate on Thursday, despite Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying last week that Democrats were not opposed to such a requirement.
The amendment to the elections bill needed 60 votes to advance. It was defeated in a 53 to 47 vote.
Ahead of the vote, Senator Jon Husted (R-OH) laid out the information on the add-on, showing the rules are simple for anyone to comply with:

“All that’s in this amendment is 5 forms of photo ID that people can list to vote.”

Leader John Thune’s (R-SD) office shared in a Thursday press release Schumer’s statement mentioned in the CBS News report linked above, while adding that if the Democrat Party was sincere about their newfound respect for “commonsense voter ID requirements, it should be a cinch to vote for it”, as they said:
After years of Democrats calling voter ID an instrument of voter suppression, Senate Democrats now say they are on board with commonsense voter ID requirements.
Here are just one of many of New York Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer’s clear statements affirming his and his conference’s support. Here are his own words on Mar. 17, according to NBC News reporting:
Asked whether he’d be open to negotiating a slimmed-down photo ID bill with Republicans, Schumer replied: “Look, I’m not going to speculate on details. You know what our objection is — our objection, as Democrats, is not to a photo ID.
And here’s Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) just on Monday this week in an interview n CNN:
KAITLAN COLLINS: “If there was just a clean vote on voter ID, specifically, is that something you would support?”
SEN. CORY BOOKER (D-N.J.): “Yes. And New Jersey has voter ID laws. I got to show my driver’s license.”
RNC (Republican National Committee) Chairman Joe Gruters said in a statement after the vote:
“Democrats like Chuck Schumer lied to the American people by claiming to support commonsense voter ID laws, while voting against what more than 80% of Americans see as the most basic safeguard to protect our elections..
“American elections are for American citizens, and that should never be up for debate. The only reason Democrats continue to oppose voter ID is because they want a system where they can cheat.”
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) once again holds the Dems’ feet to the Inferno on this hypocrisy:

“This was a SCALED DOWN version of the SAVE America Act, one that requires only a photo ID at the time and place of voting, and omits the proof of citizenship… pic.twitter.com/2dv6uMJzAs

“This was a SCALED DOWN version of the SAVE America Act, one that requires only a photo ID at the time and place of voting, and omits the proof of citizenship requirements,” the Utah lawmaker said.
But, “even THAT was something that every single Democrat in the Senate voted against,” Lee added.
“Now, think about it this way. Two years ago, every Senate Democrat supported a bill that contained a voter ID requirement. What changed? Why are they doing this?!” he said.
Great question, Senator. We’ll let the readers decide, since it needs no explanation on our end. Stay tuned!
