‘President of Peace’ Trump Steps In to Stop ‘Major War’ in Southeast Asia – RedState

As we’ve covered before here on the pages of RedState, the border countries of Cambodia and Thailand have a troubled past and a tendency to not get along very well. The distrust between the two countries goes back centuries and, in very broad terms, is based on differing interpretations of where their shared border begins and ends.

That dispute has led to periods of bloodshed over the years, and things boiled over in a big way this past July in what has been described as “one of the deadliest confrontations of the two states’ contemporary history.” After a Cambodian soldier was killed in May, a “heavy military confrontation between the Royal Cambodian Army and the Royal Thai Army” began.

It’s unclear who initiated the fighting last summer, but there was significant damage inflicted.

The clash took more than 38 lives, displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians, suspended over 500 schools, and inflicted infrastructural damage to countless homes, hospitals, and historical and religious sites. These included irreplaceable heritage monuments such as Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Toch, Ta Krabei, and the Preah Vihear Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

President Trump was able to broker a peace deal between the warring countries during his October trip to Malaysia, but the truce didn’t last long. Thailand began launching airstrikes against Cambodia earlier this week, with each country blaming the other for breaking the peace accord. Tens of thousands of residents from each country were displaced due to the escalating violence.

Cambodia, Thailand Agree to Ceasefire Less Than 24 Hours After Trump Says No ‘Deals’ Until Fighting Ends

Some good news came Friday, however, and it looks like the week is ending on a positive note as President Trump revealed via social media that the two countries are piecing back together their prior peace accord. The president revealed, “They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim.”

I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running War. They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim. The roadside bomb that originally killed and wounded numerous Thai Soldiers was an accident, but Thailand nevertheless retaliated very strongly. Both Countries are ready for PEACE and continued Trade with the United States of America. It is my Honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could have evolved into a major War between two otherwise wonderful and prosperous Countries! I would also like to thank the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, for his assistance in this very important matter.

The countries had faced pressure to cool things down from other world leaders, with Pope Leo also calling “on all sides to immediately cease fire and resume dialogue.”

It’s another win for President Trump, who has repeatedly and publicly stated his desire to be the president of peace. I like to imagine (wink, wink) that, at this very moment, the president is blasting out “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” on the Rose Garden loudspeakers.
