There’s one surefire thing you can say about socialism: It fails, every time it’s tried. In fact, given the choice between living in a socialist system or having an abscessed molar, smart folks will go with the tooth problem every time; after all, that abscessed molar can be pulled, the abscess drained, and you’ll be fixed up in no time. Socialists, once in power, are a lot harder to get shed of.
In the latest example of this, New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight administration have had to back off on a major campaign promise: Free city buses. Why? Because it’s an impossible, stupid socialist pipe dream.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash online after admitting that his campaign pledge to make city buses free is hitting funding roadblocks.
You don’t say! Could the fact that decades of communist municipal government have driven most of the people who actually pay taxes out of the city? If you’re wondering where all that tax revenue went, Mr. Mayor, best look to Florida, not that Governor DeSantis will do anything but point and laugh at you – or at least, he should.

Conservatives in and out of New York were quick to pile on.
Conservatives were quick to react to a Politico interview where the mayor acknowledged that one of his most hotly discussed campaign promises wouldn’t be fulfilled this year as his administration works to gain support from lawmakers in Albany.
“It won’t ever happen. It was a high-profile promise that won’t ever happen. It wasn’t really meant to,” wrote conservative media host Jason Rantz on X.
“Turns out socialist slogans don’t survive contact with reality,” National Republican Congressional Committee Press Secretary Mike Marinella posted on X.
“Hahahahahahahahahaha. You got played, NYC,” wrote Amy Curtis, a conservative writer, on X.
“Mamdani lied about free buses — and basically everything else in his campaign,” wrote Tim Young, a media fellow at The Heritage Foundation, on X. “And the idiots of New York fell for it,” he added.
“Socialism is like a toxic ex: big promises upfront, disappointment later,” conservative media outlet Prager U posted on X. “Just ask New York about those free buses.”
Predictions are hard to make, especially about the future, but I’ll take a shot at one here: The “free buses” thing will never happen. If somehow they make the buses fare-free for a while, the whole thing will collapse before long, and the fares (and the turnstile-jumpers) will return. Why? Because the commie Mamdani has based every feather-headed proposal he promised on “taxing the rich,” and in so doing, has driven most of the rich clean out of the city. There are, to be sure, some of the wealthy who will remain; home is home, after all, and there are people who love the Big Apple, who have deep roots in the community, and some of them even vote Republican. Trouble is, in the five boroughs, there just aren’t enough of them to prevent a Mamdani.
So, a lot of the people Mayor Mamdani promised to tax into the adjacent time zone are leaving. Can you blame them? These are the people, after all, with the most mobility. And just down south is Ron DeSantis’s Florida and a host of other low-tax, low-regulation, investment-friendly states, which will welcome the “wealthy” of New York with open arms – and remind them of which political party made the success of those red states possible.
I’ll offer another prediction: This won’t be the last pie-in-the-sky thing that will be the subject line on another “Sorry, we can’t do that” memo out of Gracie Mansion. What’s more, it won’t be the last time conservative wags have the chance to point and laugh at yet another socialist failure.
Editor’s Note: New York City is now facing the consequences of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist takeover.
