Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) is one of the more humorous members of Congress.
I like the fact that he feels an obligation to regularly inform the public about the work he does in the House. He’s also shown a quick wit in dealing with detractors.
Here’s Rep. Burchett’s report on what they were voting on Thursday. He said it should save us “some serious money.”

But Burchett also had a protester who reportedly got up in his face, and things turned physical outside the Longworth House Office Building on Thursday. Burchett had just been involved in the final voting in the House for the week. The protester was upset with Burchett’s position on the Israel-Hamas war, and he allegedly bumped Burchett as Burchett stood his ground. Then Burchett shoved him in response.
“Everyone has a right to their opinion, and they can say all of the filthy stuff they want. But they don’t have the right to bump the Congressman,” Will Garrett, a spokesperson for Burchett, said in a statement.
Burchett, with his typical humor, said that the man “had bad breath.” Well, that’s one way for Burchett to say he thinks the guy’s points and his approach stinks. Fortunately, it sounds like he’s okay after the interaction.
The Capitol Police questioned the man, and he was released. So far, there are no charges.
The Capitol Police told the Washington Examiner that “for safety reasons, we cannot discuss any potential investigations.” So they may still take action, but they may not want to say what they’re doing just yet. We’ll have to see what happens and if there is any follow-up.
Burchett is not one who will roll over if someone gets physical with him.
I mentioned Burchett’s quick wit with detractors. He has a guy who waits for him outside Congress and frequently asks him ridiculous questions. This guy has always kept a reasonable distance; he just asks lame questions. Burchett has a habit of smacking him down with great quips.
