President Donald Trump’s love story with Canada appears to be over after it put out a misleading ad featuring Ronald Reagan attacking tariffs as bad amid trade negotiations between the two countries.
The ad was put out by Ontario’s provincial government and claimed to use actual audio excerpts from a 1987 Reagan address in which he said, “Over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer,” as images of American workers and families struggling played in the background of the ad.
Once Trump became aware of the Reagan ad, airing in U.S. markets, he blasted the country and made it clear that any tariff negotiations between the two are now over.

Trump’s post read:
The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement which is fake, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs. The ad was for $75,000,000.
They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts. Tariffs are very important to National Security and economy of the U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute also hit back and said the ad had misrepresented Reagan’s speech and was edited without permission.

“The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute learned that the Government of Ontario, Canada, created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan delivering his ‘Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade,’ dated April 25, 1987,” the statement read. “The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.”
“The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter,” it added. “We encourage you to watch President Reagan’s unedited video on our YouTube channel.”

In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that his province would pause the ads on Monday in hopes that trade talks would resume after speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

“Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” Ford said of the ad, which aired in U.S. markets.
“We’ve achieved our goal, having reached U.S. audiences at the highest levels,” he added. “I’ve directed my team to keep putting our message in front of Americans over the weekend so that we can air our commercial during the first two World Series games.”
“The people elected our government to protect Ontario—our workers, businesses, families, and communities. That’s exactly what I’m doing. Like I said earlier today: Canada and the U.S. are neighbours, friends and allies,” Ford continued. “We’re so much stronger when we work together. Let’s work together to build Fortress Am-Can and make our two countries stronger, more prosperous, and more secure.”
The ad that caused the split between the two can be seen below in its entirety.
Watch:
Trump recently welcomed the Canadian PM to the White House, where the two had a great time laughing about jokes while they spoke to the press about the status of trade negotiations, with both sounding positive about them, as RedState reported.
Let’s hope the two sides can keep talking and get things back on track.
