President Trump came out swinging against the “new regime” in Iran Monday morning, threatening in a Truth Social post to escalate military operations there if a deal isn’t reached and the Strait of Hormuz isn’t immediately reopened.
The president indicated in his post that the U.S. has been in “serious discussions” with “A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME” to end the military operation. It’s still unclear who, exactly, is part of this new regime and if it includes the presumed new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
Somewhat more clear is what the U.S. intends to do if a deal isn’t reached “shortly” and the strait isn’t – to use Trump’s own words – “Open for Business” immediately: complete obliteration of Iran’s infrastructure. Per the president:
[W]e will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet “touched.”
Before signing off with his trademark “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he noted that striking Iran’s infrastructure would be “in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror.'”

The threat on the country’s desalinization plants, which convert salt water into potable water, is a particularly stark warning, as disabling those would have a drastic effect on the population. Some in the media are saying strikes on those plants and the ensuing fallout could be considered a “war crime.”

These remarks from the president come after he told the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Priority Summit in Miami Beach on Friday that the world was “closer than ever to the rise of a Middle East, free at last from Iranian terror, aggression, and nuclear blackmail.” From Nick Arama’s reporting at RedState:
Trump explained that now they were “closer than ever to the rise of a Middle East, free at last from Iranian terror, aggression, and nuclear blackmail.”
“For 47 years, Iran has been known as the bully of the Middle East — but they are not the bully any longer,” he declared.
He pointed out how he took out Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani in his first term, and speculated on how some of the Iranian leaders might have been happy about that because he was so feared.
“But now they’re not here either,” he observed, because now so many of them have been taken out in Operation Epic Fury.
President Trump’s message to Iran’s leaders couldn’t be clearer: Cut a deal, reopen Hormuz, or pay a devastating price. Whether the “more reasonable” figures the U.S. is talking to actually have the power to deliver remains an unanswered question, but it seems the White House is serious about doing whatever is necessary to bring the military operation to a successful close.
