Ukraine Strikes Back, Destroying Rail Junction Near Moscow – RedState

We reported earlier on the Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv overnight, and now it seems Ukraine has been busy, too. On Thursday, a new report appeared claiming that a Ukrainian “spy operation” destroyed a vital rail junction near Moscow, which also set ablaze several train cars carrying fuel meant for the Russian army in Ukraine.

The report appears on United24 Media, a pro-Ukraine news site that covers the Russo-Ukrainian war. The attack is said to have been carried out by a Ukrainian team early Thursday morning.

Ukrainian military intelligence carried out an operation against a major railway station in the Russian city of Tver, located about 167 kilometers north of Moscow, on August 28.

The attack targeted fuel trains, causing a large explosion and subsequent fire that spread across the station area.

According to RBC-Ukraine sources in the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, explosives were placed under several railway tanks filled with fuel.

The charges were detonated remotely at around 5:00 a.m., setting the wagons ablaze and triggering a fire that engulfed station infrastructure.

Footage obtained by Ukrainian media shows the moment of detonation beneath the fuel tanks, followed by flames spreading across the rail yard. The fire destroyed key facilities at the station, which serves as part of a supply network for Russian military operations.

Video of the reported attack was posted on X.

The report says the blast “destroyed station infrastructure and ignited a massive fire,” although in the very brief video clip, it appears that only one railroad fuel tank car was destroyed.

If these reports are accurate, this is a very slick special operation. Moscow is more or less 1,000 miles from the Ukrainian border, and if this was carried out by infiltrators, that’s a lot of ground to cover in hostile territory while carrying explosives.

RBC-Ukraine, a Ukrainian news outlet, also carried the story.

A HUR source said the strike on the Tver hub station was part of a broader effort to destroy Russia’s logistics capabilities in supplying its forces with fuel, ammunition, and personnel.

There’s a cautionary note here: Both media outlets are heavily pro-Ukrainian. As of this writing, there hasn’t been any third-party verification of this operation.

Even so, if these reports are accurate, this is an interesting tactic. Modern armies burn amazing amounts of fuel. An army in the field is generally supported by a non-stop stream of railroad cars or tanker trucks carrying diesel fuel, and if that supply can be restricted, it can greatly hamper the army’s movement. Fuel is important not only for combat vehicles but for every other aspect of the supply chain; moving beans and bullets forward is as important as keeping tanks and tracks moving. This attack appears to be a direct hit on Russia’s supply chain, and it’s an audacious one to boot, that deep in Russian territory.

Every war is won or lost by logistics. If Ukraine is starting to focus on special operations damaging Russian supply trains, that could have benefits that far outweigh the difficulties.
