PALM BEACH, Florida – President Donald Trump reacted harshly Saturday to the death of former special counsel Robert Mueller at age 81, saying about the man who probed false Russia-collusion claims for year: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
On Sunday, Kristen Welker, anchor or NBC’s “Meet the Press,” tried to trap Scott Bessent, Trump’s treasury secretary, with gotcha questions, hoping he would criticize the president for the remark.
“Do you think it’s appropriate for the president of the United States to celebrate the death of an American citizen, someone who is a Bronze Star, Purple Heart recipient and who served in Vietnam?” Welker asked Bessent.
The treasury secretary replied: “I was with the president in the Green Room at Davos and there was a video playing of what may have been an illegal raid on his home at Mar-a-Lago. They’re going through his wife’s wardrobe. And I watched the look in his eye, and I think that neither one of us can understand what has been done to the president and to his family.”
Unsatisfied with Bessent’s response, Welker tried again, pressing: “Robert Mueller didn’t order that raid. Is it appropriate for the president to celebrate the death of any American citizen?”
Bessent answered: “Again, I think that given what was done to Trump and his family, it is impossible for either of us to understand what he went through.”
“I think that we should all have a little empathy for what has been done to him and his family.”

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was indicted on conspiracy, FARA, and money laundering charges.
Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos was charged with making false statements to the feds.
Trump’s former National Security Adviser, General Mike Flynn, was indicted on making false statements to the feds after he was ambushed by FBI agents.
Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was charged with making false statements to Congress.
Former campaign advisor Roger Stone was indicted on witness tampering charges and false statements.
After ruining countless lives, Mueller submitted his final report on his investigation into ‘Trump-Russia collusion’ and concluded that President Trump never conspired with Vladimir Putin during the 2016 election.
Bessent also took Welker to task when she noted the Trump administration eased oil sanctions against Russia earlier this month.
Welker asked: “If the point of the sanctions was to stop funding the Russian war machine, why is the admin effectively rewarding Russia now?”
Bessent replied: “Again Kristen, you’re missing the point. … They’re getting less money. Our analysis shows that the maximum extra amount that Russia could get would be $2 billion, which is one day’s [worth] of the Russian Federation’s budget.”
Welker noted: “Understood, but they wouldn’t have gotten any of that with the sanctions in place.”
Bessent concluded: “Kristen, whoever does your research, you should get rid of!”
