The Alaska U.S. Senate race early Wednesday remained undecided, with Democrat Mary Peltola leading incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan by a fraction of a point with a quarter of the ballots still out.

The race was, and remains, controversial, because of reporting that confirmed Peltola’s campaign members schemed and recruited another Dan Sullivan, Daniel J. Sullivan, to seek a position on the ballot in a way that would confuse voters and siphon votes away from the Republican.

Both leading candidates were at about 48%.

Multiple investigations have resulted from the scenario, and dozens of letters have gone out notifying people they could be targets. The governor has suggested the results might not be certified immediately, pending those reviews.

However, the state uses ranked choice voting, so if no candidate exceeds 50%, the “preferences” of those who voted for other candidates will be redistributed and recounted.
