As we reported, the truly ugly Obama Presidential Center is supposed to open next month.
Barack Obama put out some videos with Star Wars actor Mark Hamill on May 4th to try to hype his library. However, it was a disappointing effort that fell flat and drew a lot of mockery.
May the Fourth be with YOU, from the Obama Presidential Center.
The building is supposed to represent four hands coming together for unity. If you don’t see it when you look at that monstrosity, don’t worry, no one else does either. He put his words from one of his speeches on the outside of the building. But it’s so poorly done, it’s hard to see what they say, which is again, so emblematic of Obama.
The funny thing was that Obama was very involved in the design, which may explain why it was so ugly. The designers revealed the depth of his involvement.
It was designed for Obama by Billie Tsien and Tod Williams, who recently revealed the design “very much a product of his vision as well as ours” after the former president repeatedly pressed them to make the design as “bold” as possible.
Williams said, “He drew on one of my drawings, made a strong mark, which indicated that he didn’t think I was being bold enough.” [….]
“He wanted us to do something that we had not done before, and that is hard,” Williams said. “He didn’t let it rest.”
So in case you weren’t getting it, the dystopian Death Star-looking thing is “bold.”
Oh, and they even have “bold” merchandise they’re trying to soak the public to buy.
If you thought the building was ugly, wait until you see the lapel pin they’re hawking that’s supposed to depict the Center. Click below to see full picture.
“The pin represents the intersection of bold design and global leadership,” the website reads, noting the proceeds go to the Obama Foundation “to inspire, empower and connect people to change their world.”
How much did you think that is? $3? $4? Nope, they want $30 for that gray, lumpy blob.
Many weren’t impressed with the pricey pins — with some comparing them to chewing gum, pregnancy tests and blobs of toothpaste.
“It looks like chewed gum or an eraser that a third grader has been mutilating,” one user on X wrote.
“How is that even uglier than the actual building?” said another.
“I thought the building was ugly, then I see the pin,” wrote a third.
If it’s possible, the pin may be rivalling the building for the ugly prize. They’re a matched set.
The money would go to the Obama Foundation to promote more “change.” Oh, goody, just what we need. Obama himself is making the rounds, trying to promote the Center.
It was great talking to Stephen and the inspiring young people we’ve worked with at the @ObamaFoundation on the @ColbertLateShow.
When the Obama Presidential Center opens this June 19, my hope is that this will be a place where people can come together to meet, learn, and work… pic.twitter.com/R6KEUBWkQL
Obama’s Center is just such a festival of fail. It’s taken more than ten years, it’s had local protesters, it’s gone way over its original estimate of $500 million to $850 million. And I think the gray blob may just be the perfect representation of the failure.
