In an unscheduled court appearance Tuesday morning, Loay Alnaji, the Muslim community college professor/pro-Hamas agitator who assaulted and killed a Jewish man during protests following the October 7 attacks on Israel, pled guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and felony count of battery causing serious bodily injury, with a serious felony enhancement and aggravating factors of weapons use and vulnerable victim for both counts.
Alnaji faces up to four years in prison for each felony count, and will be sentenced in June.
On November 5, 2023, Alnaji was one of the leaders of a pro-Hamas demonstration in Thousand Oaks, California, organized by the Islamic Society of Simi Valley (ISSV), and Paul Kessler was one of a handful of pro-Israel counterprotesters. Alnaji hit Kessler in the face with a large metal bullhorn, causing Kessler to fall and fracture his skull. Kessler died approximately seven hours after the altercation.

Pro-Hamas Professor Loay Alnaji Heading to Trial, Charged With Manslaughter in Death of Paul Kessler
At the time of Kessler’s death, Alnaji and his supporters claimed that Kessler was the aggressor and he “slipped.” They also claimed Alnaji and his fellow agitators were simply peaceful protestors, but video RedState published at the time contradicts that. Kessler and his fellow pro-Israel counter-protesters were stationed across the street from the pro-Hamas mob, but the mob crossed to come to him and get in his face.
In this video, taken as Kessler was being loaded into an ambulance, you can hear the pro-Hamas agitators’ blatant antisemitism at the 0:45 mark: “Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler didn’t want you, Hitler should’ve smashed you.” The man shouting into the bullhorn has been identified as Mamdouh Elalami, ISSV’s 2023 Man of the Year. (Warning: Strong language)
Elalami was joined in his antisemitic chants by ISSV’s Imam Shaykh Omar Jubran, the father of Kareem Jubran, a candidate for Mayor of Simi Valley and current Simi Valley Unified School District Trustee. In the years since Kessler was killed, ISSV obtained approval from the city to greatly expand their mosque, over vehement objections from neighbors.
Alnaji, a naturalized citizen originally from Jordan, has been on paid administrative leave from the Ventura County Community College District, where he was a computer science professor and faculty advisor for the Muslim Student Association, since his arrest in 2023.
According to court records, an amended information was filed by prosecutors in the case Tuesday morning. We have requested a copy of that and will update this story as more information becomes available.
