Now There’s This: Fugitive Found in AC Vent

OK, if you’re like me, “Fugitive’s two-year hideout discovered to be an air conditioning duct” wasn’t on your bingo card for today, and yet, here we are — in Georgia, that seems to be just what has happened. The fugitive in question, Kayla McKenzie, was being sought for a felony bench warrant until a tip led cops to a certain house.

This time, Kayla McKenzie wasn’t able to ducout on the authorities

A wanted fugitive was arrested on Monday, April 20, after being discovered in an air conditioning vent, the Grady County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) said.

GSCO said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that Kayla McKenzie had an outstanding felony bench warrant and was found inside a vent in a Moultrie home after investigators received a tip.

GCSO said McKenzie was taken into custody without incident with the help of the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office. She faces charges related to her bench warrant, GCSO said.

Have a look at the vent:

I’m tempted to ask, “How?” Now, from the photo, Kayla McKenzie looks distinctly on the smallish side, but that’s a tiny vent. Staying in a place like that would be bad for one’s health; you could come down with a bad case of the flue.

Another local news outlet has a little more detail:

Grady County deputies arrested Kayla McKenzie on Monday after receiving a tip that she was staying at a home in Moultrie.

Grady County deputies teamed up with Colquitt County deputies as they responded to the home and obtained a search warrant.

During the search, deputies say they found McKenzie hiding inside an air conditioning return vent built into the floor.

Why would she choose this hiding place? She must have looked at that vent and decided, “I conduit.” It’s only a matter of luck that she was able to squeeze into the passage in any case, as there is a distinct trend nowadays to remove older, less efficient ventilation systems and replace them with smaller ones; this is called a reduction. There is another rumor that when Kayla McKenzie was discovered at last, the police asked just what she thought she was doing. Her reply? “Just chillin‘.”

There is a rumor, as well, that the police officers’ search was aided by the fact that the house’s vents were organized by label designation them A to Z; Kayla McKenzie was reportedly found in the E vent. As for the structure, there was evidently some damage to the duct when the fugitive was extracted, but the homeowners are putting off repairs; it’s a case of vent hole later.

Seriously, it’s good to see local cops as good at ferreting out fugitives as their federal counterparts.

Kayla McKenzie can take comfort in one thing: While she may now be finally called to account on the crimes for which her bench warrant was issued, at least she can’t be accused of draft dodging. One wonders, though, in Georgia’s climate, how her presence affected the comfort of the others in the house. She undoubtedly blocked the flow of air.

Definitely not cool.

I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.
