It’s always good to have a Plan B, even if you’re the President of the United States. Granted, presidents generally have a replacement, in the form of the vice president, and in the current term, Vice President JD Vance has proven to be worth his salt.
Even so, when you’re not just President of the United States, but a guy who has been the target of not one, not two, but three assassination attempts, a little extra contingency planning isn’t the worst idea. President Trump apparently thinks so. Deputy Assistant to the President Sebastian Gorka, on a podcast recently, spilled that President Trump has left Vice President Vance a letter in a drawer of the Resolute Desk, to be opened if the vice president finds himself at that desk after a disaster that results in him suddenly shedding the “vice” part of the title.
President Donald Trump has instructions tucked away in the Oval Office for Vice President JD Vance should he ever need to succeed him as president, deputy assistant to the president Sebastian Gorka said in a recent podcast interview.
“There is a letter in the drawer in the Resolute Desk that is addressed to the vice president should something happen to him,” Gorka said on the “Pod Force One” podcast on Wednesday.
Trump has faced repeated threats to his life, including an attempted assassination just weeks ago at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner drawing concerns about the president’s safety and growing political violence from left-wing actors.
President Trump still has two and a half years in office, and there’s no telling what some new nutcase from the increasingly unhinged left might try. And it is from that unhinged left that the danger comes; it may be true that only Trump could go to China, where he is now, but the great irony in all this is that President Trump may just be safer in Beijing than standing on the South Lawn of the White House. Not only is China hoping for some trade deals, but it would be a major loss of face for Chairman Xi if a foreign head of state were assassinated in his country, and if there’s one thing commies know how to do, it’s to lock down an area – a block, or a city.
Gorka cast doubts that foreign countries would attempt to take out the president as Trump attends a high-stakes summit in Beijing.
“Everybody wants recognition from this man. This is the most powerful individual we have seen since the likes of Eisenhower. Right? This is a man everybody wants to be at the table with him, to have the state dinner, to have the recognition,” said Gorka.
“The idea that you do something that undermines your recognition goes against what they wish to have.”
No, it’s the domestic threat that’s worrisome. Three have tried already.

There’s just one exception: Iran. Iran has people in the United States. Hundreds (at least) of Iranian nationals entered the United States during the Biden administration. We don’t know who a lot of them are, or what their intentions are, and if any Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) goblins have been infiltrated into the USA, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of them took a shot, and horrible as the notion is, we should note that any such IRGC goon would be trained and equipped better than the three amateurs that already tried.
Which may explain what little we know about the possible contents of that letter:
Trump told NewsNation in January he has “very firm instructions” if he were to be taken out by the Iranian regime.
“Like, if I were here, and they were making that threat to somebody, even not even a president, but somebody like they did with me, I would absolutely hit them so hard,” said Trump. “Anything happens, they’re going to wipe them off the face of this earth.”
Could that be the instructions in this letter for JD Vance?
Let’s hope we never find out.
